History's Crime: Time Travel Radio takes listeners on Acom's multi-layered, “sometimes strange” history-through comics.
The project was commissioned by Explore York Libraries and Archives and co-created by Acomb residents, author Paul Birch and director Kate Valentine.
The show was developed through a series of workshops at Acomb Explore from October 2024 to January 2025, with the help of sound recordist Tom Smith.
The creative team took inspiration from the 1680 Acomb Manor Court Rolls and the Acomb and District Herold Community Magazine since the late 1980s.
Time Travel Radio reveals amazing similarities between Acomb's past and present.
The show captures everyday life in the 1680s and 1980s, featuring a rethinking of 1680s lawsuits, humorous reviews of 1980s news reports, and a long nod to local businesses.
In addition, modern Acomb residents share their own personal reflections and bring perspectives to production from different generations.
Acomb residents of all ages were involved in the creative process, but for some it was a transformational experience.
One participant said:
“Some activities were very difficult. Roleplaying in front of strangers, recorded while doing so, but in the session, this was able to increase confidence among us. A good amount of support has been developed.”
Digital drama director Kate Valentine was equally pleased with the project.
She said: “Time Travel Radio brings Acomb to life in the 1680s and 1980s, combining humor and memories in the familiar radio format.
“It was great to work with local actor and writer Paul Burch to make these stories come true.
“We can't wait for our audience to listen to these monologues online and recognize Acomb's legacy in a whole new way.”
