That was the verdict of manager Adam Hinshelwood after his team fell to a 2-1 defeat to Altrincham on Tuesday evening.
York controlled ownership for most of the match, but struggled with creating, which proved to be costly in the first half.
His unique goal from Josh Stones was not his own true fault, but he gave the lead in the first half.
City welcomed halftime at the community stadium with a very flat-minded feeling and gave the necessary response early in the second 45 as Alex Hunt curled an impressive strike from the edge of the region.
However, Minsterman's defensive accident turns out to be a problem as a misunderstanding causes Justin Amarzole to sneak in between Carm Howe and Harrison's man, plunging the ball into an empty net.
This is a brilliant negation by Rob Linton and Junior Luamba as York clears the strike from the line and Callum Howe heads for the bar despite York's unrelenting attack on Altrincham's goal.
Hinshelwood felt his team was unsurprisingly unlucky to go home empty-handed, especially given his recent record on his part of beating the Robbins since 2011.
“We have to have a kind of hoodoo with Altrincham,” joked Hinshelwood.
“I thought it was a really good performance on a big spell.
“Once another day, Ollie shots came in and the defender didn't know what he was doing and he could get it on the bar.
“As soon as it happened, and there were a few other moments, and Junior had it out in the corner, but we could have tried to keep it up, we went into a good area and Cam John crossed it and it's coming back from him. That's another good opportunity.
“Mainly the team went well and played offensive football today.
“We probably wanted to play more ball from the back to the front, not the way we wanted to play, but we had to find another way.
“We were very unlucky not to do that today.
“The goal we scored was probably one of the more difficult opportunities in the game.
“That's how we go. There was effort in it. We'll continue and it can happen in football.
“We lost a game that we are truly disappointed in this year, especially in their place, we were poor and gave three goals.
“For the guy today, we were definitely a better team and I thought things didn't fall for us.
“I don't like to resort to luck or talk about luck or decisions, but I couldn't find any important quality in the last third.”
One problem for Hinshelwood was his city-recognized goal attitude.
York was unable to track down the male man and before Amarzole could allow him to win the Altrincham match he bouncing off his head behind the stone and finds the lowest corner of the male goal.
Speaking about the recognized goal, Hinshelwood said:
“Ty heads it back to the back of Josh Stones' head and it's gone, it's a free header, can he get out of it from there?
“That's what makes things seem to go from time to time. We have players in the right area. We made our first contact and second contact and then we went behind the net.
“The second is the murderer. How someone can hit your box as a wide player, you need to track him down.
“You can't pass players there. There's no time to pass players there.
“It's a terrible decision, and it may just be the difference between us and the first team. Some of our players are focused on key moments in the game.
“It's a fullback, he's a wide player, you can't run him.
“You need to track him down, but we don’t do that, they are a great margin.
“We were supposed to come in at 0-0, so there was a lack of quality so we wanted to put Jeff in the box and calm him down a little more.
“Their front three would have won the game that day if they had the chance we had.”
Tonight's defeat will extend York's gap with Barnett at the top of the table to nine points, but the city will pick up the match when playing Rochdale on March 25th (7:45pm).
Hinshelwood refused to give up his faith in York's title hopes, adding:
“We definitely won't give up.
“It's now a massive Saturday game and we're going to bounce and score three points.
“Everyone is saying it's done and it's dusting. All we're trying to do is play the game one at a time and keep showing our resolve and efforts.
“If it shows a bit of quality when it matters, we will win more games than we lose this season.
“We played worse than this year and won the game, unfortunately, football.
“We definitely won't give up. We'll continue to play one game at a time and try to score as many points as possible in the last 12 games.”
