The Freedom of Information Act request has asked West Yorkshire Police to clarify the number of Asian gold thefts in the county since January 2021.
The response showed that seven recorded thefts in 2021 were £28,600. In 2022, we recorded eight thefts at £51,200. 112 was recorded in 2023 at a value of £422,083. 133 was recorded in 2024 at a value of 547,852 pounds. And so far, this year, Ben 17 has recorded thefts recorded at £54,250.
Recent figures from West Yorkshire Police showed that the number of Asian gold thefts in the Bradford area has increased “significantly.”
Since July 1, 2024, there have been 58 robbers with Asian gold stolen throughout the policing area in South and West Bradford.
During the same period last year, that figure was 18.
Twelve people have been arrested in connection with the robbery.
They were all released during the investigation and inquiries are underway.
Dennis Bell, detective inspector with the Bradford District Crime Team, said:
“Through the investigation, we believe the suspects used e-bikes and vehicles to target the property.
“Anyone who sees something that doubts this nature is asked to provide information.
“The suspect appears to be snapping the lock on the door.
“We would like to take this opportunity to remind people to make sure they have the latest anti-snaplock on all their doors.
“Also, make sure windows and doors are secured and valuables are locked in a safe place, preferably away from the home.”
Sabya Khan, a Labour Councilman serving Widgie at Bradford Council, recently spoke to Telegraph & Argus about his concerns about theft.
She said:
“Many of these items are family heirlooms and wedding gifts, which makes them upset for families.
“They have a sentimental attachment to the legacy of their parents and grandparents.
“There is also the psychological trauma that can be caused when you are a victim of a robbery.”
The security clinic will be held at Wibsey Library at 11am on March 1st. This will allow officers to distribute crime prevention advice on this subject.
