Michael Brett, who runs the company Liquid Catering Events near Sherburn-in-Elmet, will open Avocado Envy on Blake Street.
The new business will open at No. 3, part of a Grade II listed building and formerly occupied by The Larder Club and York Cocoa House.
The owners said: “We offer bright toasties and smoothies to go. This cafe is all about bold flavors and good vibes.”
Michael, 43, grew up in Woodthorpe and said he grew up working in pubs and hotels and was “making a living” in the hospitality industry.
Liquid Catering Events is Barts Barrow's resident caterer in Hiram. The farm, which has a marriage license for events and weddings that can accommodate up to 500 guests, is his first foray into a commercial cafe in York.
“We will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week, except Thursday, with space for 32 seated customers and a dedicated section for those who wish to take away food,” he said. .
“In addition to the classic ‘avo’ on toast, we will also be diversifying the toppings we can serve with our avocados, including 25-year aged balsamic vinegar and fresh tomatoes, or chorizo, strawberries, fried eggs and our dried ‘Fruit & Fire’ products.” Chili pepper. ”
The brunch menu includes beef burgers with citrus aioli, pickled onions and arugula selected by a local butcher, or vegan options from the Green Goddess.
“The Envy part of the name refers to the 'naughty' parts on the menu, like nachos, boozy chorizo, and mimosas. Because we are also a licensed facility,” Michael said.
The owners said they scoured York for a suitable site and chose Blake Street because of its size.
He said: “We didn't want it to be too big that it affected the standards we offer. Also, it was an advantage that they were using the site before we introduced it.” .
The license also applies to sidewalk seating in front of Blake Street.
Michael said he has invested in a new kitchen and all of his bread will be made on site, and he plans to work with as many local suppliers as possible.
Coffee will be sourced from local company York Emporium, and Avocado Envy also has its own roaster.
The owner said: “We have a ‘farm’ barista who trains new staff here, and we have four full-time employees and two part-time staff here at Blake Street.
“What I’m most excited about is getting people into that atmosphere.
“I have been managing catered weddings for many years and knew I wanted to get back into the world of hospitality.
“I worked on Disney cruise ships for many years and as you can imagine, I met so many different people.
“It’s great for everyone to come and try our wide range of luxurious toasties, brunches, guacamole and even smoothies.”
Michael said the target release date for Avocado Envy is January 12th, but he and the team are working towards a January 4th opening.
