Speculation is mounting that the MK Dons attacking midfielder could be set to be announced as the club's second new signing this week, following the signing of Michael Mellon.
But Alexander refused to talk about Lee — to avoid the same situation that occurred at the window last January, when Carlyle angered him by speaking publicly about the pursuit of Jake Young.
“I know we talked about George Lapsley just before the announcement, but we signed him and it wasn't a surprise for the club,” the City manager said.
“But all the other players who aren't currently signed with us are signed with other players, so I don't want to talk about players from other clubs unless there's something concrete.
“I think it's wrong for me to do that. When the same thing happened to us last year, I didn't like it, so I'm not going to be a hypocrite and do the same thing.”
Alexander, who brought Mellon on loan from Burnley, believes another striker is not a priority at the moment, despite Olly Sanderson's loan being cut short following Andy Cook's season-ending injury. revealed.
Claims that City are interested in American international Matthew Hoppe, who was recently released by Middlesbrough, are understood to be completely off base.
“There are one or two positions that we would like to strengthen right now, but the striker option is not one of them,” Alexander added.
“We looked at the team and changed the shape a bit to a 3-4-3 with a striker and two attacking midfielders next to him. We like the way it looks so far.
“We have players in our building that I think would be a good fit. I don't want to just put players together and imagine them having an impact on the team.
“I think it’s important to try to do that, but at the same time I think it’s important to keep in mind scenarios where there are a lot of injuries, and we have to avoid that if possible.”

Jamie Walker, who did not play in the match against Grimsby, is currently attracting attention to his future at Valley Parade. But Alexander hasn't told the Scotsman about it.
“Jamie only missed one team and I haven't spoken to him since. He's been in every team he's been fit in since I've been here.
“If people want to talk to me, my door is always open. I've never kicked anyone out of my office.
“If I feel I have to talk to the players and give them some definitive thoughts from me, I will do that.
“But I don't think there's any point in talking about nothing if it's so open and could go either way. It's just waffle.
“I tend to have that attitude, but any player knows they can always come knock on my door and talk to me.”
