Changes to the existing car park, owned by Bradford Teaching Hospitals Trust, are expected to take place this spring.
The improvements, which include the installation of barrier access and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), will impact both visitors and staff at Bradford Royal Infirmary and St Luke's Hospital.
Barriers separate staff and visitor parking in a system designed to make it “easier” for patients and visitors.
The “exit payment” system is designed to allow visitors to “pay for the parking they use.”
A spokesperson for Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: 'Car parking for patients, visitors and staff at Bradford Royal Infirmary and St Luke's Hospital will be improved this spring.
“This includes installing barrier access and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR).
“A barrier will separate staff and visitor parking, making it easy for visitors and patients to know where to park. The Trust will retain full ownership of the car park facilities.
“We want to make it easy for patients and visitors to know where they can park.
“The new system will be ‘pay when you leave.’ This system will only pay for the parking used, rather than the current ‘pay and show’ system where patients and visitors may purchase expensive tickets. “It's more fair to pay.'' You don't know how long they'll be at their appointment.
“We will work with staff to explain the plans and minimize disruption during construction.
“Patients can learn about the changes and how they will affect them.”
An individual contacted T&A with concerns about the new system.
The source told the T&A that staff parking charges would rise from £18 to £48 in the afternoon.
They also believed that the Belt and Road parking lots would be sold to a private company in March.
However, the trust strongly denied this and said: “We have no intention of selling the parking lot to a third party.”
A spokesperson for Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “We can confirm that the trust has no intention of selling the car park to a third party.
“We will retain full ownership of the parking facility.”
However, the new fees for staff and visitors have not yet been revealed.
