Met Office outlook for the UK for the rest of this week
The Japan Meteorological Agency said a snow and ice warning was likely to be issued as airflow from the north kept cold temperatures on Thursday and Friday, increasing confidence in the areas most likely to be affected.
A front will move in from the southwest on Friday and Saturday, bringing the potential for more sleet and snow, and more warnings.
Acting chief forecaster Christophe Almond said: “Another cold night is expected on Thursday, with temperatures likely to be the coldest of the winter so far, with temperatures reaching -15C in snow-covered parts of Scotland and the north of England. It could be -16 degrees Celsius,” he said. .
“Early on Friday morning, a front arriving from the west will encounter colder air over the UK. This could bring further sleet and snow to some parts of the south and west, with some areas heading north-east to central areas. There is a risk of temporary ice formation, but the extent of this is still unclear.
“Rain is more likely than snow as the weekend approaches, with calmer air moving in across much of the UK by Sunday. Northern Ireland and western Scotland will see rain and winds from Sunday into Monday. Winds are most likely, with drier and calmer conditions in the south and east, but with night fog and frost.
