Construction has begun bringing new luxury hotels, pubs and restaurants to North Yorkshire.
The multi-million-pound development, named Cliffmount, will include a hotel located at Clifftop on Runswick Bay, consisting of 20 seaview rooms and a separate pub and restaurant.
This will replace the once popular Cliffmount hotel, which was demolished in October 2024 as part of the first phase of development.
Cliffmount's opening is projected for the summer of 2027, with contractors expected to be on-site for about two years.
Cliffmount aims to set new standards for sustainable hospitality by becoming the UK's first hotel to be Passivhaus certified. To achieve this, you need to adhere to strict construction and design standards, which will be a more complex project than standard design and construction.
If successful, Cliffmount will also be the only hotel to obtain individual certifications for pubs and restaurants.
Managing Director Melissatumlinson said: “In 2022, our family purchased the former Cliffmount Hotel with a very clear vision of building a sustainable hotel that will positively impact the entire industry.
“A lot of work has now been achieved, but with the building work being underway, that vision is finally beginning to become a reality.
“We are very grateful for the support of local residents. The positivity around the project is very refreshing and encouraging and reinforces what we are doing is right for the community.”
The project is currently managed by a chartered building surveyor and project manager, Silverstone Building Consultancy, and is led by Stainforth Construction.
Contractors will focus on the foundations in preparation for the next stage of the build.
“We've seen you have a lot of fun and hard work,” said Mark Turner, site manager for Stainforth Construction.
“Like all construction projects of this scale, there is a significant amount of foundation that needs to be done before physical structures are introduced.
“The first example focuses on reluding, cutting and filling the ground to the required site level, followed by preparation and loading of work, followed by work on substructure, foundations and ground drainage.
“As expected for a project of this size, there is some disruption for local residents, especially in terms of noise and traffic. I apologize for this.”
