More than 1,100 homes across North Yorkshire are without power after rain and river flooding from Storm Dollar left many homes flooded overnight.
On Saturday night, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service attended flooded properties in Merton, around Kirkby Mills, Keldholme and Kirkby Moorside.
The service said “a number of residents” were transferred to local evacuation centers by the Red Cross.
Fire services from Malton, Aycomb, Helmsley, Kirkby Moorside, Danby, Ripon and Selby were called out with rescue equipment, boats and high-capacity pumps between 7pm and 3am GMT.
At 6am GMT on Sunday, a Nunnington resident who had spent the night pumping water was rescued by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service after a pump failed.
River levels were rising in Pickering on Sunday morning and councilor Joy Andrews told Radio York sandbags were appearing across the town.
She said: “We are still very concerned. Certain areas that have not necessarily been flooded before are flooded, but so far only roads are flooded.” .
The Environment Agency said the river level at Pickering Beck was 1.44 meters (4 feet 7 inches) at 10:30 GMT on Sunday, with river levels of 1.44 meters (4 feet 7 inches) above 1.40 meters (4 feet 6 inches). may be flooded.
The highest recorded water level at Pickering Beck was during the June 2007 flood, when it reached 1.98 meters (6 feet 5 inches). 85 properties were affected, causing around £7 million in damage.
At the Pickering Flood Mitigation Plan, the river level was 4.72 meters (15 feet 5 inches) Sunday morning. The highest level recorded at this gauging station in October 2023 was 3.53 meters (11 feet 5 inches). However, the Pickering scheme was introduced after the 2007 floods.
In Marton, firefighters rescued an elderly couple who had driven into floodwaters, while in Danby, crews rescued a motorist whose car broke down and became stranded between two bodies of water.
North Yorkshire Police urged motorists not to attempt to drive through floodwaters and warned that fallen trees and debris were blocking roads across the region.
Police said they have received 160 calls about highway closures and flooding, and are responding to about 15 to 20 calls about fallen trees and road closures.
High winds caused property damage in Scarborough, where firefighters were called to a tree that fell on a bungalow, but there was no damage.
The power outage primarily affects the North York Moors National Park, with power outages reported in the village of Hatton-le-Hole.
Owners of Homestead Kitchen restaurant in Goathland posted on social media that both power and water were out and the problem was affecting “the entire village”.
Firefighters attended two scenes in Leyburn and Newby where the gable ends of houses had collapsed.
The roof of a house was torn off in York and a tree fell on a van in Middleton, but no injuries were reported.
A yellow wind warning is in place for all of Yorkshire until 18:00 BST. Flood warnings are in place for Pickering Beck, Buttercrumb Mill, Kexby Bridge, the River Esk at Ruthwarp and the River Foss at York.
The National Trust said a gathering with Father Christmas at Nunnington Hall had been canceled because the car park was “completely flooded”.
