The East Riding of Yorkshire Council has been awarded a £7.8 million grant from the government's housing reclamation agency Holmes England, with two new protected housing schemes and work in progress.
Two protected residential developments that will benefit from the funds are the Deira Court of Moat Hills in Anraby and Driffield.
The Council has committed £25.7 million to destroy and rebuild the accommodation to meet the latest standards.
Hull-based developers Hobson & Porter have been awarded a demolition and construction contract.
A groundbreaking ceremony took place at Mort Hill, Annraby, attended by the Council and representatives of Hobson & Porter.
The new protected scheme features an open-plan layout and a mixture of one bedroom flats.
Housing adapts to meet the needs of residents during aging and helps them live independently for longer.
Additionally, there is a co-resident lounge for social activities, with each scheme equipped with modern digital telecare equipment connected to the Council's “lifeline” support services.
The funding is part of the Affordable Housing Program (2021-26), which received an additional £400 million in its fall budget.
Councillor Anne Hundley, East Riding Leader of Yorkshire Council, said:
“It's great to see work in progress and look forward to the first new residents moving to accommodation when the project is completed.”
Shahi Islam, director of Holmes England's Affordable Housing Grants, said: “As a government housing and regeneration agency, increasing the supply of high quality affordable homes is one of our important objectives, and we are committed to the Yorkshire Council's efforts to achieve their ambitions. We are committed to supporting East Riding.
“Projects like Moat Hill and Deira Court are key examples of how agents work together with partners through the affordable Homes program.
Mark Smee, director of Hobson & Porter, added:
“Our business was established in 1971 to provide construction services primarily for local government housing projects, so we work with one of the longest service clients in the sector to create local projects like this. It's great to offer.”
