But during 2018's “The Beast from the East,” Claire was in the final stages of her first pregnancy, and while she was calm, those around her were more worried.
“Four days before my due date, it was still snowing. I was fine and wasn't particularly nervous, but everyone around me kept texting me, 'In the valley. Why don't you go further back to Mom and Dad's?'
“But I decided to sit in my happy place because if I move something might start happening. We managed to escape on Saturday and went to the hospital on Sunday night. .”
“When it snows, there's only one safe route out of the valley. No other routes are available, so you have to make sure that one route is really free.”
This time we also enlisted the help of neighboring farmers, one of whom brought a snow blower.
“A personal gritter, a farmer from Arkengarthdale, came in with a snow blower and this year blew the road all the way to Kirkby Stephen, all the way to the top,” she says.
Claire adds that it's a difficult life to imagine living in the city.
“I have some friends who live only 80 miles away and I sent them pictures of us here and they really didn't believe me.”
