Seven different firefighters and police are in fire along the line edge of the North Yorkshire Moores Railway between Gosland and Pickering, which is thought to measure 500m x 300m.
The North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service crew is attending the site, with crews from Whitby, Gothland, Pickering, Rice, Scarborough, Danby and Malton, in addition to crews from nearby RAF Feelingdale.
The scene also features Argocat from Kirkbymoorside.
In a Facebook post, North Yorkshire Moors Railway said it is unable to operate any more railway services today and is arranging buses to securely return all visitors to the first station.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Our officers are currently patroling the A169 due to concerns that drivers are stopping vehicles on main roads and stopping vehicles to take photos and videos of the fire.
“We are appealing to the drivers not to do this. It's not only a safety concern, but the vehicle is causing interference.”
