York followed up their 4-0 win over Yeovil Town on Saturday with a disappointing defeat to Altrincham, with Regan Linney scoring twice and Matty Cossilo scoring the extra.
All three goals in the match came in the first half and Hinshelwood was frustrated by City's play in the opening 45 minutes and felt that any response from his side was too late in the game.
“It was a little different than last year, but it could have been the same after Rory hit that lob,” Hinshelwood admitted.
“When you're losing 3-0 and you're running around and getting close to people, you can't play with grit and determination.
“When you're down 3-0, you can't react. The National League is unforgiving, so you have to react every time you take a step.
“Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday, we have to be ready to outdo our opponents.
“That's why we made the changes today. We wanted to keep it fresh, but it didn't work out.
“They have to take full responsibility for it.
“It was a really disappointing night, especially for the fans because they gave it their all.
“It’s a tough place to be on a Tuesday night and over 700 people deserve more than we gave.
“I was really disappointed in the first half, but I thought we could really try in the second half and our goalkeeper made an unbelievable save.
“In the second half, we stuck to our game plan a little more, and our team selection today may have been a bit off.
“We started the game well, won some corners and kept them on their toes for the first 10 minutes.
“But in the National League, you can't have periods where you can switch off and play for half an hour. That can happen.
“I thought maybe we just weren't able to understand their setup right away and play them and identify where our space was.
“They were sharper with the ball and won more duels than us, but you can't win games if that happens.
“That happened for most of the first half.”
Hinshelwood also felt Altrincham's third Kosillo strike ended the match for York, with any signs of a turnaround against a difficult opponent unlikely.
He also blamed his players for not taking responsibility in possession and for failing to deal with the pressure Altrincham applied when City were unable to break down the Robins.
Hinshelwood added: 2-0 might have given us a little more hope, but the third goal was very soft.
“It was their hunger to press and the bad decisions we made. We didn't execute it perfectly and the players didn't take responsibility.
“They put pressure on us and the players didn't want to pass back or get on the ball. The easy thing is like playing back to the goalkeeper.”
“We've often played like that, but it's another team that comes to give Callum Howe the ball and we've struggled when we've been in that situation.
“I have to give credit to the opposition, I thought they were sharper and more clinical when it mattered.
“If you look at the amount of balls that went into the final third today, we were equal, if not more.
“Their forwards came up with some magic at the right time.”
