Second home owners will pay double council tax from April
I've heard that in parts of North Yorkshire, more second homes are for sale.
That's after the property owner pays double council tax from April 1st.
North Yorkshire Council says it hopes to tackle the shortage of affordable housing by reducing the number of long-term empty properties and encouraging property owners to use empty homes for locals.
Zoopla research shows that in some parts of the country, we have seen four times as many homes appear on the market.
Phil – Real Estate Agent CPH-Yorkshire Coast says it is one of the places.
“After Covid, there was a boom in people looking at the second property holiday home on the coast, locking down again and it needs to be somewhere as a bolt hole.
The North Yorkshire Council states, “Second 80 of the Leveling and Reclamation Act 2023 allows premiums to be applied to a second home. The second homeownership within the North Yorkshire area is important and is perceived to have a negative impact on the supply of homes available to meet the needs of local housing. The Act requires that the first decision to impose this class of premium must be taken 12 months before the fiscal year in which it applies. This decision was made on February 21, 2024 to apply this premium.
“From April 2025, we will add a 100% council tax premium to the bill for property that will be liable for Congressional Tax and classified as the second home. This will result in 200% council tax.”
