We were invited to a press event for the Lotherton Christmas Experience. The event, held at Lotherton Hall in North Leeds, is a sold-out event every year, and it's no secret why.
Lotherton Christmas Experience – AD/PR Invitation
This is our third time going to the Christmas Experience and it was just as magical as ever. This time it was even more so because I got to see the wonder through both of my son's eyes. My oldest son is now 7 years old and I don't know how long the Christmas magic will last. For my youngest, this is the first year that he really seems to understand what's going on. However, it turned out that we both got completely into the Christmas spirit and it was a truly magical experience in every sense of the word.
What else is there in Lotherton?
If you have never been to Lotherton Hall, I highly recommend it. Even if you've never experienced Christmas, there's plenty to do. Lotherton Hall is a small Edwardian hall surrounded by extensive grounds. There is a wildlife park, playground, cafe and landscaped gardens. The grounds are a child's dream, with plenty of space to run around. A great park to play in, lots of picnic tables and the trails are stroller friendly which is an added bonus.
The wildlife park is extensive and you can easily spend a few hours wandering around it. It's full of birds from all over the world. Penguins (our favorite!) and mammals. This includes less obvious varieties such as armadillos and maras. They are now embarking on an amazing animal experience where they can get up close and personal.
What does the Christmas experience include?
Going back to our Christmas experience, it was so wonderful. There are plenty of activities you can take part in, and of course you can go meet the big man himself. The staff who played the elf characters were great with the kids. They weren't too in your face and knew when to back off. This meant that even my picky guy, who usually refuses to cooperate sometimes, got to interact with them and ask lots of questions.
The Christmas experience begins at Lotherton Hall itself. In previous years, we were warmly welcomed with mulled wine (or juice) and mince pies. We then had a chance to walk around the luxuriously decorated rooms. Each Christmas tree was decorated with a different theme. There were old-fashioned toys on display, a sumptuous Christmas dinner prepared and lots of crafts to make it feel cozy and homely. But this year, I missed out on this great start because I was late.
After browsing the stalls at the Christmas market for a bit, our next stop was to meet Mrs. Claus at the elf village. She sat by the cozy fireplace and told us Christmas stories while we made our own Christmas decorations for the tree. After we chatted a bit and took some photos, we got to work on some more crafts.
elf village
The Elf Village was buzzing with activities, from crafting with the elves in workshops to opportunities to purchase food and drinks. The Yuletride tipi sells hot and cold drinks. There's also a s'mores shop with everything you need to make the perfect treat. The fire pit is outside so you can grill yourself.
Around the central seating area is an elf workshop. We were given a golden token upon arrival, which we could use at the crafting station. The elf's workshop was beautifully decorated. They were all great at staying in character, talking to us throughout and helping us with crafts when needed. You can choose from sand art, painting ornaments, or decorating plates. The boys chose sand art and plates, both of which were so much fun that they were able to take them home afterwards.
Meeting Father Christmas
On our way to the North Pole, we met the elf Twinkle Stardust, who entertained the boys from the off. When I radioed the boys to ask if they were on the nice list they were in awe. Luckily they were on the good list (I don't know how!) and were allowed to pass…. Mom, on the other hand, was on the naughty list!
Lotherton Christmas Experience
We met another elf who guided us through the first part of the experience. There we talked more Christmas stories while making our own Christmas lights (decorating tea light holders). This was a nice sentiment, but since the holder was made of glass, it wasn't very kid-friendly and I was worried that my little one might shoot it across the room. After escaping unscathed, we headed to the wishing well to make our Christmas wishes. A little humor went a long way, so we laughed and headed out to meet the big man.
Santa Claus (“It's just pretending to be a mummy, the real mummy is too busy to come”) was waiting for us in the cave cabin. After a small child rushed in and fell out the door, we sat next to Santa and began the intimate experience. The elves were very kind and offered to take pictures while we chatted with Santa. He asked the boys what they wanted for Christmas and remembered a rather long list and their names. Very impressive! Then, as we were leaving, we were both given bags (which contained stuffed reindeer).
The Santa experience lasted about 30 minutes and was very memorable. The start was a little slow and complicated for our 2 year old, but the rest was great and we both loved it.
illuminated trail
Last but not least is the illuminated trail…
Our Christmas experience was around tea time so it was perfect for walking the trial to see everything lit up. However, you can do this any time of the day. During the winter, it's pretty dark and gloomy all day long, but it's covered with trees so you can enjoy a walk. That path is a Christmas tradition. The trail was nice but lacked the wow factor for us. Probably because there are so many great light night events going on at the moment, but it's included in the entrance fee to the grounds so it's not a deal breaker.
our verdict
Overall, we had a lovely time at Lotherton's Christmas Experience. I would not hesitate to book to go again. We love this place anyway, so be sure to spend the day and use the rest of the facilities on site during your stay. You will be outdoors a lot, so please dress warmly!
If you would like to attend the Christmas Experience, please check ticket availability here. The event period is from November 23rd to January 5th.
