Severe flooding occurred on the A684 near Aysgarth in Wensleydale on New Year's Eve, causing chaos as heavy rain caused water levels to rise quickly and forced road closures. Within just 15 minutes, floodwaters had risen to a depth of 500 mm, trapping the BMW.
Emergency signs along the road warning of road closures were illuminated as water flooded the area. Despite warnings, one BMW was caught in the floodwaters.
A detour through Qubek was also flooded, causing more flooding in the area and drivers warning others to avoid the surrounding roads.
A post on North Yorkshire Weather Update said: “A684 Aythgarth. All road closure signs are on. Water level rose to 500mm within 15 minutes and this is where the BMW was submerged!” .
“If the occupants were still inside, the car would have been half underwater. We're glad we were able to tow the car to safety on a dry hill.”
