North Yorkshire Police said the incident occurred last night (March 23) at around 6pm in York's Hadrian Avenue and Osbirdwick Lane areas.
The squad said Young's group would steal bikes from outside the store in Tan Hall Lane.
The Force statement stated: “The male victim in his 20s chased the group on Hadrian Avenue, challenged them and restored the cycle.
“He was then threatened by the group and chased by Osvaldwick Lane, where he attacked him before any members of the public could step in.
“The victim was left uninjured, but the incident really shakes me up.
“He managed to hold on the cycle.
“We are suing witnesses to anyone in the area who has CCTV, doorbell footage or dashcam footage that may have caught any of the camera incidents, to stay in touch with anyone who has CCTV, doorbell footage or dashcam footage.”
