Police said the man first struck the driver's side window, and when the owner started the car, he followed and punched the rear window, breaking it.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said no one was injured in the incident, which happened at 6pm on January 2 at Baxter Gate.
The force released CCTV images of a man who said he needed to speak in connection with a crime investigation.
