The York Knights boss's call comes amid returns from the trio Ata Hingano, Bloodward and Connor Fitz Simmons who were injured in the qualifying team last weekend, but that was to make up the numbers with 17 Fit players who could be used for a trip to Barrow.
“In the end, that's with the players, right,” Applegarth said. “It's okay to say 'I'm out and do this', but players have to feel comfortable enough to play.
“All I say to players is, “If you're playing, I expect you to play the way you know you can play.” If you're carrying a bump before the game, don't get healthy unless you're willing to play with that bump.
“There's a really tough group here, every player raises their arms, and then they have to be smart.
“One thing I want to emphasize is trying not to put players at risk, or to not put players at risk who could do a lot of damage. Mostly people who are getting bumps or bruises that are uncomfortable and probably not too comfortable after a day or two.
“But if someone is obviously injured and you know that it causes some serious damage, that's a whole other story.”

The trio, alongside Jack O'Neill, is likely to return to the frame by the end of the month, but the Knights can have two more names to add to the injury list following their amazing victory in Cumbria.
Skipper Liam Harris, who bagged a hat-trick at Craven Park, was removed as a precautionary measure due to an ankle injury, and the outside of Buck Joe Low gave way for Jude Ferreira mid-second half due to eye problems.
If Harris' ankle swelling did not decrease sufficiently by Sunday, he may miss Widness the 1895 Cup quarterfinals as he recovered from his broken hand.
Applegarth claims his usual half-back pairing will play through injuries if possible.
“He got one of his attempts and someone landed awkwardly on him, so he took a bit of a bump,” he said of Harris.
“It's settled in a lot of hell, we'll give him until Friday, but he says he's working a lot better. I don't think there's a big loss.
“We won this game by the last 10 minutes, but trying to drag him out of the field is not the easiest thing to do!
“It was just wiser. He played it for 50 minutes so we were trying to take care of him a bit.
“I thought it was a proper captain knock from him. Not only did he play, but he managed the game the way he did it.
Harris picked up an ankle injury at Barrow after winning a hat trick. (Image: Craig Hawkhead's photo) “Ata, he's there. To be honest, he's not far this week.
“It was a very small fracture of his hand so he's back with most of the things now. Last week was a little too early for him, but we had quite a few knocks so we named him just in case.
“Listen, if you tell him, you'll play tomorrow. He's another thing you have to manage. He'll probably try and get out there in a wheelchair with broken feet if he feels he can get the guy in the game. That's the kind of desire you want for your team.”
There is good news for the law that does not have a fracture in his face, but further investigation is underway to determine the extent of the damage.
“He had a CT scan just to rule out the fractures, but no fractures,” Applegarth told the press.
“He has an appointment with another eye expert tomorrow (Thursday) just to see the muscular damage behind that eye. When he looks anywhere other than straight, it still really hurts, so there's clearly something that needs to be investigated.
“But I'm happy that there doesn't seem to be any permanent damage in terms of fractures or anything like that.”
Joe Lowe has already spent time through knee injuries, and appears to have set another spell on the bystanders with eye problems. (Image: Craig Hawkhead's photo) Ward, who has been on the sidelines since January, has been designated to return in time for next weekend's championship clash with Doncaster.
If Fellow forward Jacobugannon does not return from the issues surrounding the removed cyst against Widness, he could also return against Don.
“Connor, he's probably two weeks away. We were struggling with the middle at that point, so we put him down just in case.
“Wardy, he's completed his final check this week, so he should go back to the Doncaster Games contest as everything is going well.
“Jacob had something a little bad in the place where the scars were visible, so he is not entirely correct yet.
“We want Sunday, but if not, it's definitely a week later unless there's a set up again.”
