Heavy snow has hit the region following an amber weather warning for snow and ice. The warning, which was due to last until midnight today, has been extended.
A yellow weather warning for snow and ice is in place until midday tomorrow (Monday 6 January).
“Further snowfall and freezing in some areas will cause particular disruption to travel,” the Japan Meteorological Agency said in a warning.
It added: “Some roads and rail routes have been affected by longer travel times for roads, buses and trains. Some untreated roads, footpaths and cycle paths are showing frozen spots. There are also injuries caused by slips and falls on the road.”
Today's snowfall has already caused major disruptions to the railways, with railway companies urging passengers not to board the trains. Other popular attractions such as Castle Howard and Carlton Towers have announced closures due to the weather.
