Tadcaster said on social media Tuesday afternoon that O'Connell was fired from his position as manager, and on his website:
O'Connell left his position after two seasons and first acquired a hot seat after relegation, so he had to build an entirely new team.
Tadcaster continued to achieve an 11th place finish in his first season, in just two places in the relegation zone, before his 17th finish.
O'Connell now reveals that he wasn't actually fired by the brewer, but instead left his own agreement for “financial situation.”
The former Albion manager explained how he perceived budget cuts for his playing team, up to 700 pounds, so he and the club's targets for the season couldn't match.
O'Connell wrote on social media:
“Unfortunately, the club issued a statement immediately, meaning my team and players were unable to hear the news from me.
“Through my time at the club, my management team and I worked relentlessly on and off the pitch to rebuild and strengthen the foundations of Tadocaster Albion.
“I am extremely proud of the hard work, dedication and passion that our staff and players have shown throughout this journey.
“I want to be clear by addressing recent speculation. I wasn't fired.
“I fully accept that the results this season were not where either me or the board liked them, but my departure comes from the financial situation.
“I was informed of a budget cut of £700 per week, but unfortunately I was unable to accept those terms.
“I don't think it's possible to build a team that can seek promotion under such a significant cut.
“My team and I wanted to go back to winning, so we had a robust plan to do so.
“And also increased the pressure to select players from the bottom edge of the pay scale, which poses unique challenges and further limits our ability to compete at the level we sought.
“Thanks to my team, my players, and our extraordinary sponsors, especially the young guns, I want to develop my heart.
“Their support was important and immeasurable.
“I will leave Tadcaster Albion with great love and admiration for myself, my team and the fans and volunteers who have very warmly welcomed me.
“Your passion and support means us the world.
“Thank you for the memories.”
