According to JMW partner Thomas Pearson, the need for social connection and the rapid adoption of AI is driving the requirements for better digital infrastructure, including data centers.
“We have seen changes in the real estate sector over the past five years,” he said. “Data centers are becoming very important. We need to know if we like them or not.”
The development industry requires these critical components to not only provide domestic infrastructure, but also do so in the most sustainable way possible.
Data centers are hungry for energy and the amount of electricity they need is incredible. Especially with the advent of AI software like ChatGPT.
“If you ask a single question for ChatGpt, it uses 10 times more power than if you just type it into Google,” Pearson explained.
Whatever the challenges, they have to overcome, he said.
“By establishing data centers in our country, we can control them under our regulations and laws, and we don't rely on global risks in terms of controlling that data and what happens with it.”
