This post is a collaboration with the TV License (BBC trademark), but all my thoughts and experiences belong to me.
Life in our home is chaotic. Between work, school runs and giving kids to football training and games, there's little time to breathe, let alone relax. By the time Wednesday night rolled, he avoided seven pitches with a tattered pride (and hamstrings). It requires a little downtime. And that's where live television will become my savior.
Live TV Magic: Escape from Madness
There's something special about live television. The thrill of not knowing what's coming next, the collective experience of seeing something when it happens, and the pure joy of being able to yell at the judge without ruining the game. Whether it's a football match, the panels are catching surprising gems from various TV movies, or showing that it's a good old drama.
Our TV Ritual: When and what we see
TV is a big part of our downtime as we have two soccer-obsessed kids and a wife who deserves a break as much as I do. Here are some of our favourite moments:
Saturday Night Movie (with popcorn and negotiation)
After a busy Saturday of soccer training, we settle for a family movie. The choice process is an Olympic level discussion, and the boys are looking for an action-packed, smash hit while my wife and I are trying to sneak into the classics. Recent picks include Spider-Man: No Way Home (BBC One), Paddington 2 (ITV), Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone (Channel 5). Whether it's a superhero fight or animated adventure, it's a chance for us all to relax together. (And yes, remote is strangely my hand when it's time to skip ads.)
Sunday Night Match Analysis (aka shouting on TV)
Sunday is boys' match day, and by the evening they're playing “best goals” in the living room. We usually watch live Premier League matches (Super Sunday) or catch matches on Sky Sports (BBC One, Saturday, 10:30pm) and discuss tactics (read: discussion), dangerous referee decisions, and whether the father left (arguing) whether it was not because of “that knee injury.” (assent).
Winding up all week: the sweet sound of silence
After Wednesday night soccer, I'm back to the Broken Man. This is my sacred time. Hot showers, cuppas and quality TV. Whether it's a glamorous drama like Silent Witness (BBC One, Tuesday, 9pm) or a panel show where I lie to you? (BBC One, Friday, 8:30pm) This is my solo blissful moment. There are no screams or discussions. The pleasant glow of me, the sofa, and the TV.
Documentary Dive: Family Learning Experience (Type)
Sometimes I get sucked into documentaries. I love Planet Earth III (BBC One, Sunday, 8pm). Children ask enchanting and insightful questions. Ten minutes later, they are struggling to the floor, and my wife and I are fully invested in the penguin mating habits. The best family bonds.
Why Live TV Is Important: Rest, Connecting, and Safe
TV is not just a background noise in our home, it's a way to pause and reset. Whether you're laughing together in comedy, cutting a plot twist or enjoying a bit of sports, it's an easy way to connect. Life is busy, but these moments, these little pockets of tranquility – keep us in sane.
And honestly, when you spend a day dodging muddy football boots and brokering a brother's conflict, a bit of live TV is the closest thing to the spa day you're trying to get.
Don't forget your TV license
If you want to watch movies on TV, catch live sports, or stream BBC iPlayer, you will need a TV license. With your TV license you can enjoy a variety of live TV. It covers you:

Live TV on streaming services such as YouTube and Amazon Prime Video. Everything about BBC iPlayer.

So, if you're like me and rely on television to escape the madness of everyday life, make sure you're covered by your TV license.
