MyLahore founders Asghar Ali, Shakoor Ahmed and Ishfaq Farooq received an Outstanding Contribution Award from the University of Bradford, just down the road from their flagship store on Great Houghton Road.
Mr Farooq, 38, who studied business management at the University of Bradford, accepted the award on behalf of the three.
Inspired by the blend of British and Asian cultures that surrounded them as young boys growing up in Yorkshire, the cousins launched their restaurant chain in 2002.
The trio have enjoyed both shepherd's pie and jam roly-poly (during school lunches) and traditional curry (at home) and wanted to create “a place that celebrates the best of both worlds”.
“There was a gap between us,” said Ali, 49.
“At the time, restaurants served either British or Asian food, but not both.
“We wanted to create a place that combines curry, pasta, panini and pudding to tell the story of British Asia – a place that celebrates diversity.”
MyLahore currently operates five restaurants across the UK, employs over 500 people and has diversified into online food services and event catering.
Last year the business was named SME of the Year at the Bradford Means Business Awards.
Some of Myra Hall's community efforts include hosting COVID-19 vaccination clinics, donating thousands of meals to people in need, and providing curry meals to the Islamic Women's Council, which feeds more than 100 people a week. This includes partnerships with clubs, etc.
“Our journey was more than just business,” said Ahmed, a father of four.
“Myra Hall is a way to do good by contributing to the community and creating a positive impact.”
Cousins said they often remembered the sacrifices of their parents and grandparents, who emigrated from Pakistan to work in factories in Yorkshire.
“We will carry on that legacy,” Farooq said.
“Our story is one of resilience and gratitude.
“Britain has given us so much and I’m proud to be able to give back.”
Mr. Ahmed summarized as follows: “Our family is here to add value and we have built on that foundation.
“It is an incredible honor to be part of Bradford’s biggest cultural moment.”
The team at Myra Hall are currently preparing for Bradford’s 2025 UK City of Culture celebrations, and the restaurant will serve as a showcase for the city’s culinary scene.
