Northern Power Grid, which supplies electricity to 8 million customers, is asking people not to set off fireworks near overhead power lines, cables, poles or substations.
The company warns that energizing is dangerous and can jump through gaps, posing a risk of injury or death.
Gareth Pearson, director of health, safety and training at Northern Powergrid, said: “We want people to have fun and celebrate New Year's Eve, but we urge people to be careful and take a moment to think about safety before planning fireworks. I recommend it to everyone.” Please make sure you are well away from our power grid and property.
“Interference with the power grid can be dangerous, and by taking these additional simple precautions, people can have a great Christmas season and start 2025 safely.”
Telecommunications carriers are warning people that setting off fireworks near power lines, cables, utility poles and substations can ruin festivals and New Year's celebrations and cause serious or fatal injuries. We advise you to be fully aware of the potential dangers.
