North Yorkshire World Heritage Sites were attacked by destroyers over the weekend.
Fountains Abbey near Ripon was destroyed from 6pm on Friday, February 14th to 9am on Sunday, February 17th.
With potential for lasting damage, the graffiti was painted in both the monastery and St. Mary's Church.
The paint used for structures with grade I listed is oil-based and can cause considerable ruin in medieval plaster.
The Fountain Monastery dates back to 1132, while the church dates back to the 1870s.
“We're a great opportunity to see the North Yorkshire Police Department,” said Sergeant Danny Copperwheat, with the North Yorkshire Police Neighborhood Police Team.
“The North Yorkshire Police do not tolerate these types of conduct. Our officers work vigorously to bring the person responsible to justice.”
Officials are suing information that can help with the investigation or if they see someone acting suspiciously in the area during the crime.
