The yellow alert is in effect from 7am to 11pm on Tuesday and covers most of the county from north York to the coast.
Unstable conditions will continue over the next week as a series of low-pressure systems move across the country.
These could lead to heavy rain, strong winds, and snow.

Meanwhile, temperatures are expected to drop on New Year's Day, and a yellow warning for snow is expected to be issued from 9 a.m. until early Thursday morning.
Tony Whisson, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “Winter showers are likely to be part of the forecast as cold northerly winds take hold later in the week.”
Neil Armstrong, the Met Office's chief forecaster, said: “Given weather conditions that are so variable and can change so quickly, it's important that people keep up to date with the latest forecasts. ” he added.
