The Freedom of Information Act request has asked West Yorkshire Police to give the number of Asian gold thefts across the district from 2020 onwards.
The response showed that five recorded thefts in 2020 were £32,600. Three recorded thefts in 2021 were recorded at a value of £20,000. Three thefts were recorded in 2022 at £32,000. 49 was recorded in 2023 at a value of £170,833. In 2024, 80 thefts were recorded at a value of 290,852 pounds.
This means that £546,285 worth of Asian Gold has been stolen in the Bradford area over the past five years.
Sabya Khan, a Labour Councilman serving Widgie at Bradford Council, recently spoke to Telegraph & Argus about her concerns.
“Many of these items are family heirlooms and wedding gifts, which makes them upset for families,” she said.
“They have a sentimental attachment to the legacy of their parents and grandparents.
“There is also the psychological trauma that can be caused when you are a victim of a robbery.”
