The petition to Congress was launched by Alan David Frost, and said, “We will raise the personal allowance for income tax from £12,570 to £20,000, which will allow low-income earners to lower benefits and pensioners to earn appropriate income. I think it will help.
“We think it's abominable for pensioners to tax taxes on state pensions when they exceed individual allowances. Also, increasing individual allowances will result in many low-income earners benefiting. I think that if you draw more cash into the economy, it will bring growth.”
Once the petition reaches 10,000 signatures, the government responds and if 100,000 people sign, debate in parliament will be considered.
Currently, the petition has 133,915 signatures, and the latest update on the Congressional Petition website states that “Congress will consider this for discussion.”

What is an individual tax allowance?
The standard personal allowance is £12,570, which is income that you don't have to pay taxes.
It decreases when your income exceeds £100,000. Every £2 over £100,000 you lose £1 of your tax-free personal allowance.
This amount has been frozen since 2021.

The former Conservative government freezes its threshold until April 2028, rather than rising with inflation and wage growth.
If you are married or are in a civic partnership, and your income is less than the standard personal allowance, you may be able to claim your marriage allowance to reduce your partner's tax.
If you do not request marriage allowance and you or your partner was born by April 6, 1935, you may be able to assert the allowance of the married couple.
