As previously reported in the press, Popton Road School has been offering nursery schools for 3 and 4 years of age 3 and 4 years since this September, with 389 students currently being kept on the roll, with a “good” rating being given in 2018 when Ofsted was last inspected.
Today, York Central Rachel Maskell's MP is welcoming the announcement, part of the first wave of nursery locations across the country. Poppleton Road is the only city school to be awarded a portion of its £37 million capital deployment.
Maskell said: “School-based nursery schools are already making a huge difference across York for parents and caregivers looking for high quality childcare, and we are pleased that the government prioritizes the commitments they have made to improve childcare and child education, including a project to bring free breakfast clubs to all primary schools.
“I have been campaigning for a long time to expand childcare and nursery offerings through the Family-friendly York Initiative. I hope that the successful development of school-based nursery this year will result in York being awarded capital funds on the next block.”
Poppleton Road Head Debbie Glover said:
“We are part of the Pathfinder Multi Academy Trust, who applied to the Department of Education on behalf of the school. Currently, after the child's third birthday, we have been given a “significant change” that will allow for teacher-led nursery provisions starting in September.
“We will provide wrap-around care five days a week, from 7:30am to 4:45am and 3-6pm, using existing early clauses and some of our current school clubs.”
The new nursery offering on Poppleton Road will add 26 locations.
Pathfinder also includes Archbishop Holgate and Malton School, Huntington, Heworth and the new Iaswick Elementary School.
