Campaigners fought hard to save the Carlton Tavern in Acomb Road, York, from being demolished and turned into a nursing home.
And now landlord Linford Gardener has reversed that fortune, turning it into a pub that all local residents can enjoy, despite the challenges of lockdown and coronavirus.
This pub was recommended by Press reader Sophie Magson.

“Our family feels safe and secure here. Rather than sit around and do nothing during lockdown, Linford and his team renovated a run-down pub and huge beer garden. and improved.
“Before the lockdown, he had big plans for Euro 2020 that would bring the community together.
“Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, those didn't happen. I think he deserves to be well rewarded for his efforts. In addition, we will continue to offer more products, including a higher quality hand-pulled ale. The variety of drinks available has also improved.”
That's really a compliment.
Here's Linford's story:
Why is Carlton Tavern worthy of The Press' Pub of the Week?
We aim to be a community hub pub for Holgate Acomb. We have made every effort to keep our customers informed and safe during the coronavirus outbreak.
New person in charge
Linford and Rebecca now run the Carlton Tavern.
What's the best thing about this pub?
Extensive gardens, children's play area, socially distanced tables inside and a wonderful Sunday carvery.
How do you satisfy your customers?
By providing a safe environment, a commitment to customer service and satisfaction, cleanliness, and creating a good atmosphere.
What challenges have you faced during the COVID-19 crisis?
The big challenge during the shutdown is not only the fact that I just took over, but going from having huge plans for Mother's Day with over 100 people booked, to having everything canceled. There was plenty of beer in the basement. Fortunately, we were able to donate all the snacks and soft drinks to a local nursing home, the police station next door, and the Akomu fire station.
How have you adapted to reopening during the coronavirus crisis?
Social distancing was very easy due to the size and layout of the pub. We have designated entrances and exits, sanitizing stations, and hourly cleaning processes.

What types of drinks are available and what are the best sellers?
We sell a variety of beers, lagers, wines and spirits. The best seller is probably the lager.
Do you sell food?
Yes, there are many! We are currently reducing our menu and participating in the Eat Out to Help Out program (Monday to Wednesday). Sunday carvery also available.
What is your favorite story about pubs?
It's always been part of the community and employing local people. From the time it was an orphanage to a hotel and now a pub.
