Pavement parking can be dangerous, especially for families with small children, people who are visually impaired, and people with disabilities. A recent poll found that 87% of parents have had to walk down the road because of a vehicle blocking the sidewalk. It will also damage the pavement.
Living Streets has been campaigning on this issue for over 50 years and it's about time we put an end to it.
Pavement parking has been banned in London since the 1970s (with some exceptions). Scotland adopted a similar approach to London, which came into force earlier this year. The Welsh Government has indicated it intends to take action on pavement parking, but England is far behind.
I hope readers will join Living Street and advocates like me in calling on the new government to tackle the troubling legacy of pavement parking once and for all. Everyone would be better off that way.
