A penguin-themed exhibition by wildlife artist and BBC filmmaker Robert E. Fuller opens in North Yorkshire from today.
Inspired by expeditions to South Georgia and Antarctica, the event includes penguin art, photography and film, reflecting the artist's lifelong obsession with penguins.
Robert, who regularly makes wildlife films for the BBC's The One Show, says Antarctica was the most “magical” wildlife experience of his career.
“I love penguins. I've been to the South Atlantic twice now and its raw, unspoiled nature is one of the most amazing places I've ever been,” says Robert. spoke.
“From the dramatic landscapes to the sights and smells of the many amazing marine mammals and birds, the experience of being in this raw, wild place is overwhelming.”
This multimedia exhibit brings together paintings, pencil sketches, photographs, and films created over several years, and also includes a collection of new sketches inspired by recent travels this fall.
It culminates in a film that tells the story of this six-week expedition in which Robert also visited the remote Falkland Islands.
“Getting there was an adventure in itself because of the choppy seas and long flight times, but it was worth it to experience so many special creatures,” he added.
The new exhibit includes films and photographs that capture the beauty of Antarctica's icy wilderness. It includes footage of thousands of king penguins marching along a wide stretch of coastline surrounded by vast glaciers and jagged snow-covered mountains.
There's also a comical episode in which a penguin tries to reach the ocean through a line of elephants and fur seals basking in the sun.
The artist will also open his studio to the public to give visitors a glimpse into his artistic process, and event staff will provide complimentary mulled wine, mince pies and, of course, a penguin bar.
“I hope people put this on their calendar of things to do this Christmas,” Robert said. “I would encourage them to learn about and enjoy this wonderful region and its wildlife.”
Robert Fuller's new exhibition 'Penguins in Art and Film' opens today 30th November 2024 until 6th January 2025 at Robert Fuller Gallery, Thixendale, North Yorkshire, YO17 9LS).
