York Crown Court heard that a vulnerable teenage girl took a teddy bear when she met Oliver Thomas Rappton Lane for sex and was called “unrighted sex slaves” in their online chat. He knew she was a minor.
The girl, now one of three girls, 24 years old, has been convinced to send over 400 indecent selfies in total, including doing sexual acts on her own after setting up a “Sugar Daddy” online profile.
The 80 images were from the first girls, and in total contained 141 of the worst category of indecent images of children. All girls were between 14 and 16 years old.
Defense lawyer Sarah Vine KC said the girl was “eager to” engaged in “fantasy sexual dialogue” with him.
They discussed online what they wouldn't do before meeting for a sex session and he gave her the words to use when she wasn't used to what they were doing.
The teddy bear made him feel uncomfortable. After the sex session, he was discouraged from further meetings, Vine said.
He was nervous with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, so he didn't recognize her vulnerability as others did. He also had a hard time making friends.
York Sid detective constable Oliver Dalby said after the court hearing, “The crime in which Lane pleaded guilty can be completely condemned. He has given one of his victims such a deep level of emotional trauma that she is not sure if she will fully recover.”
“During the investigation, Lane has shown no regrets.
“His decision to enter a guilty plea just before the start of the trial meant that one of his victims had already undergone a pre-recorded mutual review, where she had to revisit the abuse she had suffered.
“I would like to thank the victims in this case for their courage, trust and patience. It would have been impossible to bring Lane to justice without their cooperation.”
Lane of Wistow pleaded guilty to sexual communication with children, incited two and one of them to engage in sexual activity at least 11 times, promoting the creation of indecent images of six children.
He was jailed for six years and 10 months, served on the lifetime register of sex offenders, was banned from working with children and vulnerable adults, and was subject to a five-year sexual harm prevention order.
Vine said all crimes happened during the pandemic when he suffered a “complete storm” of loneliness and isolation, as his girlfriend was working elsewhere and left without drugs due to his mental health issues.
His solution to his problem was to set up a “Sugar Daddy” profile. Since then, he has supported his own issues and has not rebelled.
He had a first class degree but never worked as an attorney.
