A launch event was held last night to mark the official opening of the new snooker hall at Kewhaven, The Latitude building on Nelson Street.
Jimmy White, nicknamed 'Whirlwind' for his fluid, quick and attacking style of play, was a special guest at the event and was welcomed with enthusiastic applause by the large Bradfordian crowd, with one fan saying: “Legend,” he exclaimed.
Dressed in smart snooker attire consisting of a white shirt, navy suit trousers and waistcoat, and a sky blue bow tie, the white man is in top form, always sarcastically saying, “I'm in the right place.” I set the mood. ” he said as he entered the venue.
The 62-year-old arrived carrying a decorative cue case in brown with his name, nickname, British flag and intricate patterns painted on it.
He faced a number of challengers that night, including one of the two owners, Mohamed Umar.
The first player, “Billy”, was fooled into a false sense of security when White scored a goal, giving him a chance to beat the multiple world champion who turned professional in 1980 and still plays at the top level. Maybe you thought there was. The first game started slow.
Although he missed the pocket on one shot, he exclaimed that it was tight with a “proper match pocket” and was impressed with Cewhaven's setup.
The 5,000 sq ft unit on the building's fourth floor has 12 heated snooker tables and is priced at around £150,000, and the venue has ambitions to host professional tournaments.
In one game, excitement and anticipation were in the air as White potted all 15 reds and 15 blacks, followed by a course to score up to 147 points by potting all 6 colors.
However, this was not the case as White reached 101 after potting one of the remaining red balls but before leaving the white ball in a position where the black ball could not be reached.
Nisar Mahmoud, the venue's other owner, said he thought the launch event was “amazing” and enjoyed watching White take on the 147.
It was an emotional moment for Mahmoud to see the snooker legend there, having grown up watching White, and his late father and brother were also big fans.
He said, “They’re going to want to come here.”
Mahmoud further added: “It's been a long journey, but to be here with you all and see this place and see Jimmy White open is like a dream come true.
“We're officially open. We can't wait.”
