I usually have a variety of hedges that I can't cut very regularly. Mainly because they hurt a little, I need to balance some ladder unstable to do them! A few years ago I gambled with a long reach hedge trimmer from a random brand. It was about 120 pounds, 20V. It didn't arrive long enough, cut anything worth talking in our yard, and it was a waste of cash.
So I've been looking for a better longer reach hedge trimmer for a while. I wanted cordless electric because I am very certain of this as a future for garden power tools. Stiga MT500E – Enter the Cordless Garden Multi Tool. This is a long reach hedge trimmer and pole saw as a package. You can also buy hedge trimmers, but this package is not that much money and SAW is a useful additional option.
It has a 48V battery with a 46cm dual action laser cut hedge trimmer blade and a 25cm puller cutting bar. More than enough for trimming and pruning.
I quickly realized that this was a much more important item than my previous attempts. With unexpanded length, it was already sturdy and had a longer reach than my useless version with a full extension! I have to admit that I was a bit worried about my weight as both accessories had motors towards the end. However, the wise adjustment of the shoulder strap makes it easy to hold a lot of weight without straining.
Hedge trimmers (and pole saws) have a very large reach when needed. You certainly don't want to spend the day at max, but it's great to be able to push it even further in really tall and tricky places, especially if you're avoiding the need to ruin a ladder. There is one particularly tricky Laurel hedge. It is set on a raised boundary and for various reasons (*cough* tricky neighbor), does not access the other side for pruning. I still admit that I'm balanced unsteady on the ladder for the farthest reach on the top.
It's great that it can be extended far, but most of the time it's reassuring that it's not necessary and can cut the wisest hedge well within its capabilities. There is no dramatic spinning required for the gasoline version. Simply gently chop along the hedge. There is no gasoline mixing or power cord that will get in the way. Your head will adapt to a variety of angles to suit your hedge. It generally feels like a more relaxed way to keep things up.
The pole saw was perfect for pruning branches of several trees, but it was also a thick section of hedges.
The two attachments are easily connected/disconnected by rotating a large yellow screw to secure them. The one next to it allows the shaft (snigger) to expand to the required length.
In summary, I'm really pleased to be able to add this long reach hedge trimmer to my gardening tools. I find it really easy to use and will save me again putting leaky gas cans in my car!
