On the online store, Sainsbury's charged £7.25 for his lightly salted favorite 750g bathtub, while ASDA sold for £6 and sold Tesco £5.30.
At the time, “yellow gold bricks” represented the crisis of British spiral life. In 2025, it's the turn of olive oil that shows just how bad inflation is, but I'm off track.
A statement from Arla Foods, owner of Lurpak, said at the time:
UK 2022…Lulupack butter is 6 pounds per tub in Asda and even has a security tag.

“Unfortunately, our farmers are facing a similar situation with the prices of feed, fertilizer and fuel needed to produce milk.
“We don't set prices on the shelves, but we'll work closely with retailers to ensure we receive a fair price for the milk that farmers produce.”
According to Statisa, Lurpak is a leading brand of British butter and perhaps a pioneer of Toast.
Tea and toast, the ultimate hangover cure, breakfast, bedtime snacks, you name it and the list continues.
For decades, Lurpak has spread its best in the world of toast.
Turning off, I picked up a large white bloomer loaf (a special bread called) and got salted butter from Asda, Tesco, Aldi and M&S. These were the results:

Tesco British Salted Block Butter 250g
5/10
It was Tesco at first, but I wasn't excited to give this a try. The lump block had a rather melancholy package and was not appealing.
However, it wasn't too bad with toast. Don't get me wrong, I had to wait for it to loosen when I took it out of the fridge, but it was ok, especially for the price.
Perhaps it looked like a good baking butter to me?
I recommend reading:
Asda Salted Butter 250g
2/10
It weighs exactly the same as Tesco, but far from the same taste. I could have swear this was lard.
I managed only a few bites before I removed it.
I don't think this is for toast, but that doesn't mean it's completely unusable. I'm leaving a big block now, so I think I'm going to make garlic and herb butter from it and use it to use it.
Aldi's Nordpak spreads slightly to 500g salted
9/10
I think this only comes at 500g, but with the exception of my words, what can I say?
I'm a Nodepack lover, I'll admit that, but I've never compared it that thoroughly with Lurpak. There was no confusion about spreading it from the fridge to the counter.
From aroma to flavor, it was creamy yet rich. Aldi is the perfect store in my eyes for this exact reason. We produce high quality products at half the cost of most places.
£2.19 for 500g is a ridiculously good price for this butter.

M&S Organic British Salt Butter 250g
8/10
Posho joined the chat.
Boy, this was lovely butter. This rich, organic British salted butter is made at the family-run Blue Valley Farm in Somerset and tastes the best of all types of butter.
However, £3.40 for 250g is scandalous.
Country Life British Sal Butter 250g

Salt butter is added with salt, spread by most people on toast, bagels and muffins, making it a popular choice for frying eggs and vegetables. But I didn't spread this butter to my worst enemy.
It's worse, if not worse than Asda.

Lulupack is the gold standard in the butter world, but I don't know now.
The toast was creamy and tasty (particularly a large portion), but nothing special.
Don't get me wrong, it's great for spreading over bread or seasoning vegetables, but the variable price of this butter from store to store is not actually guaranteed, especially if Nordpak is in the market.
