The Skipton Business Improvement District (BID) highlights its commitment to creating a “comprehensive and welcoming community” that was considered the first in North Yorkshire.
It aims to create a town somewhere for everyone “who can enjoy the town and what it offers, regardless of their abilities.”
According to the bid, accessible skipton represents a “significant step forward” in making the town an inclusive and welcoming place.
Accessible towns can also attract a wider range of visitors, including people with disabilities and their families, and can also boost business and tourism.
This bid asks every business in town to create an access guide and will provide visitors with information on how accessible the business is.
Shops and businesses will help make facilities more accessible with free training workshops and Match Fund grants for improvements such as lamps, grab rails, doorbells, and signs.
A bid spokesperson said, “Improved accessibility often benefits everyone, not just people with disabilities.
“For example, ramps and wider entrances and exits can also help parents with prams. As the population ages, it becomes essential that the town prepares to meet the needs of seniors.”
2024 – The grants that support one of the key goals of bidding in prosperity and growth, a business plan for 2029 can be used for a variety of projects with the aim of improving access to businesses.
“The grant can be used to support initiatives that make businesses more accessible,” the spokesman said.
“We will provide match funding of up to £250 for eligible improvement work and equipment.
“We are the first town to launch a scheme in North Yorkshire and we hope that as many businesses as possible will sign up for this scheme to be successful, and everyone can offer something.
The bid hopes that the project will help people with disabilities as well as those with “non-visual” disorders, such as autism, Asperger's syndrome, hearing loss, dementia, diabetes, chronic pain or fatigue, incontinence and people with breathing conditions.
Access Guide is an accessible business that gets accessible skipton stickers and is planned to be welcomed by the town's Skipton website and visit North Yorkshire website. More information: skiptonbid.com/
