During the five-minute chase, Akash Ali installed the pavement and reached speeds of up to 60 mph in the 20 mph zone, all exceeding the legal alcohol limit.
Ali, 29, of Spencer Street, Kayley, appeared at Bradford Crown Court on Friday, pleading guilty to dangerous driving, causing damage to a police car and driving beyond legal alcohol restrictions.
The judge said his problem was very serious because he was “fueled to alcohol.”
The pursuit began on July 31, 2023, when I noticed a BMW down the high field lane “at speed” at about 1am.
Subsequent pursuits were recorded by police and presented in court to pursuits made in North Street, Spencer Street and West Lane.
Shocking footage shows Ali's car being installed with pavement and boxed into North Street before plunging into a police vehicle.
The court heard that damage to a police vehicle would cost taxpayers “thousands of pounds.”
Ali eventually evade the police and his car was found near the medical center on Spencer Road. CCTV footage identifies an ant dropping an item on the grit bin. When the bin was searched, the BMW key was found internally.
Ali was arrested a little away and the officers spotted him smelling alcohol.
A breathing test showed he had 42 micrograms of alcohol per 100 milliliters of breath. The legal limit is 35.
Ali's defense team told the court that he is now struggling with mental health issues that are being addressed better with drugs.
They say he was drinking with a friend's and decided to go home. He panicked when he saw the police and tried to slow down.
He wanted to apologise to the officer who risked his life by slamming his police vehicle into him.
He had no previous convictions, but had 10 points on his license.
Ali's ruling, Recorder Singh said: The vehicle was reversed to Devonshire Street, reaching 60 mph on this chase. On Skipton Road, you slammed a break.
“This is very serious because you've been fueled to alcohol and other issues have happened. You plunged into the police vehicle. You can justify custody only.”
Ali was sentenced to 14 months in prison and was banned from driving for 25 months.
