Yorkshire property specialist Helmsley Group has received a recommendation for approval of the final part of the Coney Street Riverside Master Plan, which will play a key role in reconnecting Coney Street to the riverfront.
Approval of this section will result in the development of 3-7 Coney Street, with construction expected to begin on site as early as summer 2025.
The development will also see the construction of a new Snickelway linking Coney Street to the River Ouse riverside footpath.
The recommendation follows York City Council's recent approval for the development of 39 Coney Street to 19-33 Coney Street and 2 Spurriergate, with members reviewing the masterplan planning application and separate listed buildings. I voted in favor of both applications.
Currently, the land Helmsley Group hopes to develop is only used for bin storage and is not used by the public.
Construction of the new Snickelway will also allow for the introduction of restaurants and cafes with outdoor seating.
This aligns with Helmsley Group’s ambition to create a public realm in the heart of York and improve both connectivity and accessibility.
In addition to creating an extensive public realm through the introduction of access routes, the plan will introduce new residential apartments on the upper floors of the currently unused buildings at 3 to 7 Coney Street.
Max Reeves, development director at Helmsley Group, said: “With the recommendation for approval, we are one step closer to securing the final portion of the long-awaited Coney Street Riverside Master Plan.
“Our plan builds on our 50-year ambition to reconnect Coney Street and the riverfront, respecting the region’s rich heritage while carefully making the progress needed to secure its long-term future. This is what makes it happen.
“Through the delivery of these plans, we aim not only to create a welcoming scheme for families, but also to showcase much-needed homes in the city centre.
“This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to revitalize a much-loved but sadly under-appreciated area of the city center that has played an important role in York's history. is.”
