Ice warnings will be enacted at 3am on Thursday morning in parts of northern England
The Met Office issued ice yellow weather warnings for parts of the UK, including Greater Manchester and Yorkshire on Thursday.
The warning, which came into effect at 3am on Thursday, March 13, states that a “winter shower” is expected and British people should be aware that ice surfaces could develop. The warning remains until 9am the next day.
According to the MET office, temperatures plummet to near 0c on Wednesday and Thursday mornings, reaching 2c between 3am and 8am and rising by 9am.
Similar conditions are expected in Yorkshire and Midlands, but this is also affected by the ice yellow warning.
Met Office warns that there will likely be some icy patches on some unprocessed roads, pavements and cycle paths, increasing the likelihood of injuries or accidents.
The warning states: “The showers continue until Wednesday and Wednesday night, which fall like sleets, call-outs, and perhaps temporarily snow on the hill.
“The clear spells in between will allow temperatures to approach zero, and will not change tonight, first Thursday, especially in the Pennine and Peak districts.”
The UK weather agency, which is Met Office, issues a warning from yellow to amber to red, depending on the severity of the weather, to alert people when extreme conditions can pose a danger. Warnings can be issued for ice, rain, fog, snow, sleet, or other weather events.
This huge temperature drop comes just days after the UK experienced bright spring-like weather over the weekend, reaching temperatures close to 20c in parts of the UK.
Weather Spring begins on March 1st and runs until May 31st, but astronomical Spring will not officially begin until March 20th.
