Storm Bart is expected to bring wind, rain, ice and snow to large parts of the UK over the weekend, with forecasters calling it a “complex disaster”.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued several weather warnings for Saturday and Sunday. Most of it is yellow, but in Scotland it also includes a more serious amber color.
Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon said: “We are looking at strong winds, some snowfall and heavy rain in various parts of the UK.” Therefore, the weather for the weekend is very complicated. Generally speaking, the weather over the weekend will be very unstable. ”
He advised the public to be aware of the weather in their area. “People need to know exactly what the weather forecast is going to be like, because the weather is different across the UK,” he says. “Further south you get wind and rain, further north you get snow and rain and wind. So it depends on where you are in the UK. Stay up to date with the weather forecast for your area and make sure you know what you need. Please prepare accordingly.
“Obviously, conditions could be quite tricky, especially in the morning (Saturday) with snow and ice. So if you're leaving your home, be aware of what your local authorities are doing.”
The storm is expected to reach the UK on Saturday. An Amber Warning for heavy snow and ice is in effect for areas in the northern central belt of Scotland from 7am to 5pm on the same day, with 10cm to 20cm of snow expected above 200m and 20cm to 40cm at altitude. It can reach centimeters. A hill over 400m above sea level. The warning covers parts of Angus, Perth, Kinross, Stirlingshire and Aberdeenshire, as well as parts of the Highlands, Argyll and Bute.
A yellow wind, rain and snow warning covers most of the rest of the UK. A gale warning is in place across Scotland from 5am to 7pm on Saturday. A rain and snow warning applies to the north of England from 4am to 9am on Friday and Northern Ireland from midnight to 11am on Saturday. Rain warnings are in place for most of Wales from 6am on Saturday to 6am on Sunday, and in south-west England from 6am to 11.45pm on Saturday.
A wind warning will also be in place for coastal areas of southern England from 3pm to 9pm on Saturday.
Storm Bart comes in the wake of a cold snap that has caused school closures in parts of the UK. Scotland was the worst affected country, with more than 54 schools closed in the Highlands on Friday due to snowfall.
Rail operator Avanti West Coast on Saturday advised customers not to travel north of Preston, including Lancaster, Oxenholme, Penrith, Carlisle, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
“Customers who were scheduled to fly on this route will be able to use their existing tickets at any time from Friday, November 22 until service ends on Monday, November 25,” the company said.
RAC Breakdown spokeswoman Alice Simpson advised motorists to be aware of rapidly changing road conditions. “It's important to keep your speed down because heavy rain can create areas of standing water, and the risk of losing control due to hydroplaning in a thin layer of water is much greater,” she says.
