“The Wensleydale Sheep: A Handmade History” opens on Tuesday and runs until February 16.
All exhibitions by the 40 participating artists will feature Wensleydale's British long wool fleece.
Most exhibitors hand wash and process their own wool, from “raw” products taken directly from the sheep's backs to finished products.
Members of the Wensleydale Longwool Sheep Farmers' Association, who organized the exhibition, said the exhibition celebrates rural history, traditional wool crafts and the use of British wool in textiles, as well as the wide range of uses for wool. I hope that it will show that.
They also hope this will help pass on the ancient textile craft to the next generation and promote sustainable practices in textile production.
A spokesperson said: “The realization of the exhibition is driven by our dedication to this unique breed and our desire to show what can be achieved by combining artistic skill and craftsmanship to create beautiful products from its wool. “It was a labor of love.”
“Only by demonstrating its value can we ensure the survival of this breed for many generations to come.”
The exhibition will be held at The Tennants in Leyburn, Wensleydale.
