Forecasters have issued a weather warning for snow for York and North Yorkshire.
The yellow alert will remain in place from 9am on New Year's Day (Wednesday) until 3am on Thursday 2 January.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said “heavy snowfall could cause disruption Wednesday and Wednesday night.''
The warning covers most of North Yorkshire, excluding coastal areas.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, this means:
There is a slight chance of a power outage, which may affect other services such as mobile phone coverage. There is a slight chance that some rural areas will be cut off. Some vehicles may be stranded. There is a small chance that road travel will be delayed due to delays and cancellations for rail and air travel, as well as for passengers.
Up to 25 centimeters of snow could fall in the worst-hit areas, including northern England.
A yellow weather warning for strong winds is also in place for all of England and Wales from Wednesday into Thursday morning.
Wind speeds could reach up to 90 miles per hour, with gusts of up to 125 miles per hour possible in coastal areas and hills, the weather service said.
Temperatures in York could drop to -5C on Thursday night.
