Please note continued criticism of York's Christmas market. Can I comment on this?
My wife and I had the opportunity to spend a few days at the Vienna Christmas Market. Note that it is plural. From our three-day visit, we would like to offer some advice to York City Council in the hope that our continental experience will improve York's market next year.
Of course, Vienna is the capital, so it's big, but York makes better use of the space. Yes, the market can expand. Why not St Helens Square? So what about the back of the cathedral? What about the museum garden? Yes, I know the garden is outside the official safe zone, but the garden has a very solid gate and is the most effective barrier when closed. And unfortunately, why not close the Castle Gate car park? Wow, think of the offended motorists who are denied the right to park where they want to park. Make park and ride mandatory. (We are using it.)
One notable aspect of Vienna was the prevalence of public toilets, all of which were staffed by women who escorted users to closets. Well, maybe not in York, but why not hire a “portaloo” and distribute them around the city? I'm sure Brown's Store will support that movement.
Vienna has a very effective and economical public transport system. Transport may not be within York City Council's remit, but it is important to ensure that good public transport is available to the public.
A final point to the council. Why not flatten Piccadilly? This region is highly heterogeneous. No paving stone was out of place in Vienna.
Yes, York is smaller than Vienna, but it is an equally important international city. It deserves a better market. Perhaps the City Council could approach the 2025 market with a little more imagination and make it better.

Isn't this the most dangerous road in York?
Robert Waite claims Albermarle Road is the worst road in York for cyclists and pedestrians, but apparently he has never cycled down Wigginton Road.
The road ahead of the hospital is very dangerous as there is a lot of traffic and the road is narrow and has no curbs.
Many large vehicles come in and out of the Rountree factory grounds, and there are potholes that regularly collect water.
I rode my bike along this unlit road for most of its length in the early morning and late at night.
Even with two lights in the back and two in the front and fluorescent clothing, I was literally risking my life every day.
Fortunately, I was only hit once in a low-speed crash.
Most troubling is that there is plenty of room between the railway line and Bumper Castle to widen the road and install a cycle path.
Wigginton Road, from Crichton Avenue to the Outer Ring Road, is York's most dangerous road.

Why Labor's clean energy plan is good news
Thank you, Ed Miliband, for bringing forward the Government's clean energy plan.
The plan would end dependence on fossil fuels and ultimately reduce the burden on household budgets.
The plan will unlock £40bn of private investment each year. thus boosting the UK economy.
This will create thousands of skilled jobs, in addition to those created by building 1.5 million homes, thanks to modifications to the grid system and speeding up the planning process.
This will therefore provide more renewable energy projects, which in itself will reduce dependence on foreign energy.
So unlike the Tories' big magic money tree policy of making our bills and taxes higher because of our dependence on foreign energy, what we have is a policy that puts British consumers first and takes care of our country. A Labor government that will make it great again.
