The success of these sales was driven by the rising costs of new equipment, which slowed down new purchases and supply restrictions, and encouraged a strong market for specimen farming machinery.
As a result, second-hand machinery sales have become increasingly popular and cost-effective alternatives.
The York Machine Sales, held at the York Auction Centre in Merton, is one of the largest and most famous auction houses in the country for agricultural tractors, trailers and machinery, attracting buyers in the UK, Europe and other countries. A six-digit database and some auctions that surpass the 1 million viewing of online catalogs have made demand unprecedented this year.
In the first two sales of 2025, a total of 8,600 lots split equally between sales achieved a selling rate of over 90% with 3,177 registered active bidders from the UK, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, and 3,177 active bidders competing for equipment.
York Auction Centre partner Richard Tucker has over 35 years of experience in machine sales and is the driving force behind his success. He said, “We have seen incredible interest and excellent prices in the first quarter of 2025. Few trade in supply to the second hand market, and higher prices for new equipment, and there is an increasing demand for more affordable second-hand options.
“The difference in cost between new and used machines is to make more expensive things that will boost more expensive buyers into faster second-hand alternatives.”
There are nine sales per year, each bringing together between 3,500 and 4,500 tractors, loaders, trailers, agricultural and commercial machinery, livestock requirements, plants and equipment, building materials and produce. Now, sales are being held by timing online auctions with viewing and collections of all lots at York Auction Centre, based just outside Merton's York City.
Richard, joined by Will Amos from Machinery Sales Manager, explained:
“It is important to have the right marketing platform, maximize advertising, attack the right target audience, provide excellent service throughout every step, providing an infrastructure suitable for loading, unloading, and exporting document and wash services.
“I have always argued that achieving successful sales and optimal results is to lead it to the maximum number of people and give them the greatest opportunity to bid.
“York Machine Sales Timing Online Auctions, with a 6-digit database and a number of views in the proven online catalogue, reaching an astounding 1.4 million in one of the sales, followed by a 3-5-day bid period.”
Three farm sales were made in the last quarter, along with Stephensons Rural, which saw widespread interest and strong demand from across the UK and Europe, as well as the sale of the two machines in York. These include:
At the end of February, diversified sales on behalf of North Yorkshire's Je Coning & Son attracted a record 1.4 million views of the online catalogue. The sale, which was sold after his retirement, featured a powerful selection of well-maintained, modern equipment.
Additionally, the event was an exceptional sale for MRC Greenmoor Ltd in West Yorkshire. It features a lineup of eight modern JCB telehandlers and eight 2.4Cum buckets, attracting strong interest from the UK, the Republic of Ireland and Poland. All items were owned from new and well-maintained. The machinery will be displayed on site at York Auction Center to provide an impressive showcase that highlights the quality and scale of the offering.
