The rating, meaning “major improvement,” was awarded to Regency Supermarket, 2-4 George Hudson Street, by York City Council, following the January 10th inspection.
The Food Standards Agency website reports that supermarkets were “good” because of their hygienic food handling. It was also rated “good” due to the cleanliness of the facilities and buildings.
However, food safety management was a “large-scale improvements necessary.”

The media has obtained a copy of the Food Sanitation Inspector's report under the Freedom of Information Act.
The report told the operator of Regency Supermarket: “The most important issue to address is the inability to provide an appropriate food safety management system.
“I was shown a Better Business Manual for Safer Foods (SFBB), which was a catering issue and was not suitable for retailers such as supermarkets and was not used.”
The report continued. “Business on George Hudson Street is now well established, and there is no reason why both supermarkets and adjacent restaurants do not fully establish food safety management systems.

“If you want to look at supermarkets and operate SFBB, there is a better retail version. You need to follow the guidance in the SFBB manual to ensure it is implemented effectively.”
Additionally, inspectors discovered that one of the underground walk-in freezers was operating at “too high temperature (-8°C).”
The report states: “The freezer should be able to maintain the temperature of the product as detailed in the product packaging, as the manufacturer needs.
“If the freezer cannot achieve a satisfactory temperature, the food needs to be removed and the refrigerator will be adjusted, serviced or replaced.”
“Areas that needed improved cleaning included basement freezer doors marked with dirty fingers and a frayed first-floor chest freezer surface.”
