Matthew Nolan Thomas, 54, of Plantation Way, Wigginton, was stopped for breaking the 60mph speed limit on the A19 Easingwold bypass on March 6, Harrogate magistrates heard. However, he had a driving conviction.
The court was told that he was banned from driving for at least six months as he already had penalty points on his license.
He told them he specialized in medical support work and was one of only three people working at James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough and Sheffield Children's Hospital. Both are two hours away from his home.
He also said he was working on five research projects at Loughborough University and supporting three students.
Magistrates ruled that a driving ban would cause extraordinary hardship and allowed him to keep his driving license. They fined him £271 and ordered him to pay a statutory surcharge of £108 and prosecution costs of £90.
