The project includes a “biobanding” trial that group young athletes together based on biological maturity rather than age.
This approach, according to a spokesman, “it helps to address the physical disparities that are common in youth sports, where early developers will later develop and gain an advantage over those who experience adolescence.”
Biobanding has been previously studied in male soccer, but this work adopts a “more holistic approach” to examine physical, technical, tactical and psychosocial aspects.
Approximately 150 players from the 12 JPL team were at St John Sports Campus on Haxby Road, York for a recent trial. Data from this pilot research event is currently being analyzed by the research team.
A new app has also been developed called MaturityMonitor, designed to easily estimate a player's physical maturity.
