The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for strong winds and heavy rain across Yorkshire and the Humber.
This alert is in effect from 3pm on Friday 6th December 2024 until 6am on Sunday 8th December 2024. The harshest conditions are expected in coastal areas, where wind gusts could reach 80 mph.
The Met Office has warned that road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, leading to travel disruption. Driving conditions may be particularly difficult due to spray and flooding, which may lead to road closures. Coastal communities are advised to use caution as large waves and beach material can pose a danger to life.
To prepare for the storm, the Japan Meteorological Agency advises residents to:
Keep items outside your home safe, such as trash cans, garden furniture, and fences. Please check road conditions and travel timetables before embarking on your trip and consider changing your travel plans if necessary. Prepare for potential power outages by gathering flashlights, batteries, cell phone power packs, and other essentials. Please keep up to date with weather information as warnings can change quickly.
Coastal areas are particularly vulnerable during this weather event. The Japan Meteorological Agency is urging people to be aware of the dangers of large waves, even from the coast, as they can sweep people out to sea. People walking near cliffs should be careful and dogs should be kept on a leash.
Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to review their flood plans and ensure they have an emergency flood kit in place. In case of an emergency, residents are advised to call 999 and request the Coast Guard.
Strong winds and heavy rain are associated with a deep low that is expected to move across England and Wales from Friday afternoon. The system will bring heavy rain, particularly to the north and west, with up to 70mm of rain possible in some areas. Snowfall is also expected in areas above 200 meters above sea level in the north.
